Volunteers often bring greater enthusiasm, determination and commitment than paid staff especially within the care sector of volunteering. The DoH needs to wake up to this fact and recognise volunteers as a valuable resource well worth investing in.

It also needs to give greater recognition to the role volunteering can play in aiding individual recovery once people have left NHS care - it is often a step toward returning to work and preventing return to the NHS for treatment. This is especially true for recovering mental health patients.

All comments welcome on the DoH's apparent reluctance to accept the concept of "volunteer staff".
