Role

The strategic body for small businesses which aims to build an enterprise society in which all small businesses thrive and achieve their potential. Via the SBS, the Phoenix Fund has been set up to encourage entrepreneurship in disadvantaged areas and within groups which are currently under-represented in terms of business ownership (including women and ethnic minorities). As a whole the Fund is worth œ100m over four financial years from 2000 - 2001, and has four parts: - A Development Fund to promote innovative ways of supporting enterprise in deprived areas. - A national network of mentors to pre- and early stage business start-ups, through a new Business Volunteer Mentors Association. - A Challenge Fund to help resource Community Finance Initiatives (CFIs).- Loan Guarantees to help co-finance commercial and charitable lending to CFIs. Fifteen successful bids identified for two CFI elements. Awards total œ5.5m.
