Role
The Regional Assembly was set up by the Government to create a strong regional voice for the South East of England in the UK, and in Europe. It promotes the region?s interests in the UK and Europe, and to the Government and its agencies.
The Regional Assembly scrutinises the work of South East of England Development Agency (SEEDA) in order to maintain SEEDA?s accountability to the Region.
When SERPLAN ceased to function in April 2001, the Assembly became the planning body for the region, advising government on strategic planning and transport issues.
The Assembly aims to be a forum for sharing best practice and developing regional policy. It lobbies the Government and European agencies on policy issues such as sustainable development, social inclusion and health.
It contributes to the development of a vision for the South East by playing a full part with SEEDA in developing a Regional Economic Strategy.

Accountability
There are 111 members in the assembly. 74 of these are representatives that have been nominated by local authorities. The remaining 37 are representatives from other bodies, including business, arts, education, housing, training councils, sports, culture, tourism, faith groups and voluntary and community organisations.

The full assembly meets three times each year at locations around the South East region. The Executive Committee (chosen by assembly members) meets eight times a year. The Committee includes: the chair of the assembly; 5 vice chairs (3 from local government and 2 from social, economic and environmental partners); and 21 executive members (13 from local government, 8 from social, economic and environmental partners).
