Your Region, your choice - a SPISE seminar - Posted on 22 January, 2003 by Jeremy Barnes (RAISE)

SPISE has been concerned for some time about the move towards directly elected Regional Assemblies.   As a regional voluntary organisation, it believes that a strategic approach is essential.   At the same time, decisions, on planning and other policies, should be taken at the level closest to the community.    The decision to hold a referendum will be made after soundings by the Government.   The decision will be political, but also practical.   Elected Assemblies and the demise of Structure Plans follow ‘ Your Region, Your Choice’ and the Planning Green Paper .   A small elected Regional Assembly and a large number of Unitary Authorities could replace County and District Councils. The legislation is going through Parliament this spring.

SPISE is anxious that you should be fully informed of the arrangements for and consequences of such a dramatic change in Local Government organisation, so that you can make the right decisions.

Objectives:

To discuss; ‘What happens to Planning in an elected Regional Government?’

The Approach:

will be a-political, objective and knowledge based

Participants:

Between 40 and 80 District, Town and Parish Councillors, members of Amenity Groups and other interested individuals.
